June 23rd, 2008
After the death of filly Eight Belles in Kentucky Derby track there has been an intense examination happening on the horse racing industry. The congress is looking forward to put the pressure on the horse racing industry as the Animal rights activist is doing it.
In order to make the horse racing industry rules uniform for all the racing jurisdiction a new bill is planned to be introduced and will be submitted to House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
The horse racing industry itself is accepting that there is some problem with the operating systems they are running or dealing with presently and added that they are not sure of the involvement of government. Richard Shapiro, Chairman of California Horse Racing Board said- “Our structure is dysfunctional and needs to be functional”
The Rep. Cliff Stearns, Co-Chairman of the Congressional Horse Cacus says that it is the time to check the Horse racing industry regulations and said –“At the minimum, we need a national database to track how they (horses) die, and not just on the track. If they don’t do something, we will.”
There is a huge necessity to regulate the horse racing industry as this industry is excluded from the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006. Rep. Edward Whitefield said that - “If the federal government provides the vehicle for the revenue, simulcasting, we have an obligation to ensure the integrity of the sport.”
